Neon Lime Green

Hi everyone! Hope you are all having a fantastic Thursday! A while ago, my mum gave me this neon lime green sweater and said to me, "Neon is on trend isn't it?" She was surprisingly very right in saying so, but the poor sweater...it sat in my cupboard neglected for months till today when I have finally worked up the courage to give it a go. Evidently, I was a little weary of neon colours, particularly neon lime green. I find that neon is a little more difficult to pull off without looking and feeling like you are just a ginormous walking highlighter for the day. So, well done to all the ladies (and guys) out there who are rocking neon colours, looking and feeling fabulous!

I'll admit, I usually let the clothes "speak" to me when I go shopping. The ones that do, end up going home with me and the ones that don't obviously get left behind. Over the years, I have accumulated enough knowledge and sensibility to know what will work and what won't work on myself. As such, when I go shopping, I am usually very decisive and generally fairly efficient. This neon colour would most likely be one of those that would catch my attention, but would have ultimately been left behind. To me, neon lime green in particular is a challenging colour to work with, but after playing around with the pairing a little, I am happy to say that I can step out without feeling like I must go and "highlight" something =P .

If you are a fashion trend follower, you would have definitely noticed the influx of neon love on the Spring 2012 runways. Designers are incorporating some serious high-wattage hues into their collection and these colours set a  nice welcome to Spring (for our Northern hemisphere friends). Personally, I think neon colours are fun, flirty and definitely boundary pushing, they are your statement colours that can give your outfits a "face lift".

My tips on wearing neon colours:

  1. New neon adopters should consider starting on smaller neon pieces, perhaps a neon coloured belt to add a pop colour
  2. If you are wearing a neon top or dress, try and keep your accessory colours relatively minimal. Bright clothing with overly bright accessories can look a little too busy and chaotic altogether
  3. If you are not wearing a one piece neon coloured clothing, try pairing your neon colours with some neutral colours (e.g., black, white, navy, grey)
  4. If you don't like to shy away from colours and are looking for some serious colour pairing ideas, I suggest electric tangerine paired with sky blue, or a warm chartreuse and peach combo
Neon colours are a great way to welcome the warm weather. Don't be too conscious that you are attracting attention, you will find that most people love seeing some bright and fresh colours in their daily lives. So, go out there, enjoy the sun, and see where the neons will take you today!
