Bold & Beautiful Cobalt Blue

Hi everyone! Hope you all had a fantastic weekend! I can't believe how wonderful the weather was, and just when I thought winter was really coming as well. I love a good surprise! Many of you may know by now that I am a huge supporter of vibrant colours. I absolutely adore colours with some "personality" that can light up the room or just put a smile on people's face when they look at them. I think it's important to understand the power of colours, and their ability to lift people's spirits!  So today, I want to talk about Mr. Cobalt Blue. I think he is just stunning...so powerful, sophisticated and vibrant, and the great thing is, he will be perfect for the up coming cold weather.

For those who are not familiar with the colour, cobalt blue is a cool, slightly desaturated blue colour and historically made using cobalt salts of aluminaFor many, you probably consider it nothing more than a trendy colour, after all, it is relatively a "newbie" in the fashion scene. However, this colour actually comes with a bit of history. Traditionally, cobalt blue was used in certain ceramics, especially Chinese porcelain and paintings. Although cobalt blue in the impure form had long been used in Chinese porcelain, it was independently discovered by a Frenchmen in 1802, and the commercial production began in France in 1807. The first recorded use of cobalt blue as a colour name in English was in 1777.

Chemical properties aside, cobalt blue as a colour has become a major colour trend in the last couple of years. One of the reasons for its popularity is because it flatters almost all skin tones and hair colour. It is so versatile in pairing and works great when you team it with neutrals or other bold colours for a contrasting effect. For a simple look with clean lines, I decided to pair my cobalt blue jeans with a custom made navy striped high-low blouse. A girl with love for colours just can't help herself but to add an orange accent colour necklace =P

In case you are still searching for ideas on what to pair with the beautiful cobalt blue colour, here are some tips to consider. My favourite contrasting colours to pair with cobalt blue are: magenta, aubergine and orange. I recommend to keep the number of secondary accent colours minimal, so people will not be too distracted from the "centre piece". If you like, add up to one additional bright tone, and try to keep the rest neutral (e.g., nude colours). I would also keep that accent coloured piece relatively smaller than the cobalt piece (for example, a cobalt blue dress with a pair of magenta heels). For a more glamorous look, metallics also work wonders with cobalt. A cobalt dress or skirt would look dazzling with a gold metallic belt or some gold dangling earrings or both!

Whether you want to make a bold statement with cobalt blue hues or just add it as an accent colour to your outfit, it is one of the coolest ways to make a lasting impression!
