Aztec Inspiration

Hi everyone! Hope you are having a fabulous Wednesday! Since the landing of snow storm Nemo last weekend, it was wonderful to take a break from the cold to enjoy some milder weather for a change. Despite the crazy weather, it was breathtaking to see the city transformed overnight to a winter wonderland. Blankets of fluffy white snow covered everything from tree tops to buildings, just like icing on a delicious cake. I spent some time at the natural history museum over the weekend and was inspired to put together an outfit with a tribal, native and rustic vibe.

I know many would think of blankets and ponchos at the mention of Aztec inspired fashion, the reality couldn't be farther from the truth. Historically, Aztec clothing was worn by the Aztecs (of course), as well as other pre-Columbian people of central Mexico who shared a similar culture. The pattern of the clothing often incorporated bold prints, and strong tribal elements that embodied the rich history and culture. Today, these components are still present, but, with more modern cuts and tailoring.

With any loud and busy prints, here are some basic rules you should consider:
  • Practice in moderation by either trying Aztec patterns alone or with one other loudly printed piece. It is important to wear them moderately (and respectfully), to avoid going overboard with the theme
  • Add some texture such as leather, (faux) fur or suede to the outfit
  • Pair them with  boots to accentuate the rustic vibe of these prints (e.g., combat, leather, or Sherpa boots)
  • Accessorize with scarf, belts, necklaces etc
  • And finally, have fun!

I hope the uber-cool, street savvy and exotic Aztec inspiration will evoke dreams of remote vacation destinations and long lost civilizations =)
