The Rockaway Beach is a neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens. This area was hit hard by hurricane Sandy, but is quickly recovering to become a stronger and better community.
Fun fact, Rockaway Beach is the largest urban beach in the United States, stretching for miles along the South Shore of Long Island facing the Atlantic Ocean.
If you ever happen to drop by Rockaway Beach, I highly recommend trying three things while you are there (well, aside from a long walk along the shore line & sun baking for the day ;p) :
- Back Forty West - For some delicious boiled crabs in a bucket. The bucket comes filled with fresh crabs (4 crabs in a small and 8 in a large), potatoes and corn on the cob. The smell was what caught my attention in the outdoor alfresco area. It really doesn't get any better than watching a beautiful sunset and enjoying some tasty crabs on the beach! Plan ahead though, I was told that Back Forty West is not always there. This summer they've only been cooking their crabs twice on the pier.
- Rockaway Taco - You must give the fish taco a go! Makes me hungry just thinking about it :P
- DiCosmo's - Italian ice in mouth watering flavors. I had a combination of pink grapefruit and cherry. It really hit the spot, and it had real fruit pieces mixed in. Super refreshing on a hot day!
This little getaway is so easy to get to even if you don't have a car. Just jump on the A line subway to the end and you are there! Hope you are enjoying the end of summer and are looking forward to the new season!
Thank you so much for reading!
